What do we want children to experience?

Here at Hazelwood School, sport is an integral part of children’s day-to-day life, and it is our aim to ensure that all children leave Hazelwood having found a passion in a chosen sport. Pupils at Hazelwood are active within sport for between 4.5 hours and 6 hours per week, across games, PE and/or swimming

What do we offer and when?

Sport at Hazelwood encourages participation across all levels of competition and ensures that all pupils have the opportunity to participate in structured and competitive sport against other schools. Our games programme follows a traditional model with Hockey, Netball, Football and Cricket played by our female pupils and Football, Rugby, Hockey and Cricket played by our male pupils.

Pupils participate in competitive matches against other schools from Year 3 to Year 8, and our experienced and enthusiastic staff ensure that pupils participate at appropriate levels to match their ability. We also compete regularly in swimming, cross-country and athletics and pupils have the opportunity to participate within lessons and in competitive fixtures against other schools. In recent years, Hazelwood has developed a strong reputation regionally and nationally for its football and athletics.

Pupils have the opportunity to make use of our beautiful and extensive facilities, with an Astro hockey pitch, swimming pool, large sports hall, cardiovascular training centre, S&C suite, yoga studio, netball and tennis courts, indoor and outdoor cricket nets and extensive playing fields for football, rugby, athletics and cricket, there is ample opportunity to develop and find a passion within the sporting world.

Physical Education and swimming are also integral parts of our provision, with pupils from Robins up to Year 6 participating in PE lessons at least once per week and pupils in Robins up to Year 5 having one swimming lesson per week. Within the PE curriculum, pupils are taught about healthy lifestyles, functional movement, bat and ball skills, gymnastics and dance, indoor and outdoor athletics, problem solving and team work.

How many pupils participate?

All pupils at Hazelwood have the opportunity to participate in regular sports fixtures against other schools and in tournaments. During 2022/23, pupils played in over 400 fixtures against other schools, with 100% of pupils between Year 3 and 8 representing the school.

Pupils who show exceptional aptitude for sport and are preparing to apply for a sports scholarships to a senior school, are placed onto our Sport Scholarship Preparation Programme, where pupils are offered extended provision to help drive and develop their understanding and performance and to prepare them for scholarship assessments and senior school sport.
